Tally vs Munshiji: what each does, and why you can use both
Tally is the backbone of accounting for a huge number of Indian businesses, and for good reason. The question is not Tally or Munshiji. It is what happens around Tally: chasing payments, WhatsApp, selling, and sharing numbers with your CA.
Where Tally is strong
- Mature accounting, inventory and GST reports that most CAs already know.
- Runs on your own PC and works without the internet.
- A large network of partners and trained accountants.
What a Tally-only workflow leaves out
In most businesses, the work around the books happens elsewhere: overdue lists printed and called through by hand, reminders sent from someone’s personal WhatsApp, quotations in Word, stock checked by phone, and month-end files emailed to the CA. None of it is connected, and little of it is on record.
Side by side
| Task | Tally only | Tally with Munshiji |
|---|---|---|
| Books, GST and statutory reports | Strong. Many CAs know it well. | Keep them in Tally. Munshiji reads them through the connector and also keeps its own double-entry books. |
| Raising GST invoices | Yes, at the office PC. | From any browser or phone; on the Scale plan, invoices can be pushed back into Tally. |
| Knowing who owes you, and following up | Outstanding reports; follow-up happens on the phone and personal WhatsApp. | One follow-up list with promises to pay, WhatsApp reminders and reminder calls, all on record. |
| Customer messages | Outside Tally. | A shared WhatsApp inbox for your team (needs your own WhatsApp Business Platform number). |
| Selling online | Outside Tally. | A business card and WhatsApp store with UPI links. |
| Cash planning | Past figures. | A 13-week cash forecast from invoices, bills, EMIs and premiums. |
| Working with your CA | Backup files and Excel sent back and forth. | Your CA signs in and sees only the areas you allow, until the date you choose. |
| Working offline | Yes, it is desktop software. | No. Munshiji runs in the browser and needs the internet. |
How the connection works
- Install the small Munshiji connector on the Windows PC where TallyPrime or Tally.ERP 9 runs.
- It reads masters, vouchers and stock, and keeps Munshiji up to date.
- On the Scale plan, sales, receipts and payments made in Munshiji can be pushed back into Tally.
When Tally alone is enough
If you have few customers, they pay on time, and you have no staff to coordinate, Tally on its own may be all you need. Munshiji earns its place when follow-ups, WhatsApp conversations and team work start slipping through the cracks.

Common questions
Is Munshiji a replacement for Tally?
It does not have to be. Many businesses keep Tally for books and statutory work, and use Munshiji for invoicing on the go, collections, WhatsApp, stock, payroll and cash planning, with the connector keeping the two in sync.
Which versions of Tally does Munshiji connect to?
TallyPrime and Tally.ERP 9, through a small Windows connector app on the PC where Tally runs. Today each install syncs one company; many companies from one PC is planned.
Can invoices made in Munshiji go back into Tally?
Yes, on the Scale plan. Sales, receipts and payments can be pushed back into Tally so your books stay complete.
